3 Medical Imaging Facts

The medical industry continues to make advancements in technology, treatment and procedures. Medical digital imaging, for example, is the latest version of medical imaging. Imaging in the health care field allows medical professionals to view visual representations of a patient’s organs, bones and tissue.

Here are three medical imaging facts.

History

It is said that the first medical imaging technology was the CT scan. Godfrey Hounsfield is credited with the discovery as he and physicians at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago in 1979 were amazed to see the rendering of a brain hematoma. In the early 1980s, medical professionals began adopting the MRI. Like computers, the original medical imaging machines were extremely expensive. Over time, though, these machines became more affordable, accessible and advanced. As engineers and medical professionals were still trying to figure out how to apply the discovery of CT scans and MRIs, it was mostly used for ultrasounds.

Services a Medical Imaging Center Provides

If your doctor requires more information about what is happening inside of your body, he may refer you to a medical imaging center. At this type of facility, the staff can execute CT scans, MRIs and ultrasounds. They can also take digital X-rays. Since some patients have a fear of the machinery used to procure these scans, imaging centers often add peaceful elements like soothing decor and inviting staff. Imaging centers accept most insurance, sometimes can accommodate same day appointments and provide transportation within a certain radius.

Imaging Professional Requirements

Individuals who are interested in becoming a medical imaging professional simply need to satisfy a few requirements. A radiologic technologist specializes in imaging tests that include X-rays, MRIs and CT scans. They work with radiologists and help keep patients comfortable. A radiologic technologist should be able to communicate effectively, have a mechanical aptitude for the equipment and understand medical terms and content. Analytical, customer service and math skills are highly sought after for this position.

A medical digital imaging facility provides several services including completing digital X-rays, CT scans and MRIs. Some facilities can accommodate same day appointments, too.
